This Simple Exercise Burns More Calories Than 30 Minutes of Running
(DearPK webdesk news): As we begin to edge out of winter, the air is warming up and there are no longer any excuses not to put on your sneakers and pound the pavement.
However, scientists have just released a new study that found taking a hot bath can burn as many calories as a half hour walk. The study from Loughborough University investigated the effect of a hot bath on blood sugar control and how many calories are burned during the leisurely activity.
The 14 men who took part in the study had an hour-long soak in a 40 degree bath or an hour of cycling.
The researchers measured how many calories the men burned during each activity and monitored their blood pressure for 24 hours after each trial. While cycling burnt more calories, the researchers found the hour-long bath actually burnt as many calories as a half hour walk (approximately 140 calories).
In regards to the blood sugar levels, the study found there was a similar response from both activities, yet peak blood sugar after eating was around 10% less for the men who took a bath compared to when they exercised.
Prior research from a 2015 Finnish study shows having frequent saunas could help to lessen the risk of having a heart attack or stroke in men.
This is all to do with the idea of passive heating which means your body’s core temperature rises without the aid of exercise. Another study from the University of Oregon shows regular hot baths can help to lower blood pressure.
So the next time you feel guilty for not going for that walk, take a bath instead.
